Sports Injury Therapy Diploma (2 Years)

Year 1

Qualifications gained: I.M.S.T. Diploma in Sports Massage

Duration of Course: Runs on a part time basis, September – June for two years

GMIT Galway: Alternate Saturdays 10am-5.30pm

Annacotty Limerick: Alternate Sundays 10am-5.30pm or Wednesday evenings 6pm-10pm

Pre-Requisites for entry: All students must hold the I.T.E.C. Diploma in Anatomy, Physiology and Holistic Massage or recognised equivalent. Students must also hold a current first-aid qualification by final exam date.

Venue: GMIT Galway or Annacotty, Limerick


Study will include theoretical and practical application in the following areas:

  • Detailed anatomical study of all muscles, origin, insertion and action. Also study of all major joints, including associated ligaments and tendons.
  • Causes and prevention of sports injuries
  • Acute vs chronic injuries
  • Overuse Injuries - Causes, prevention and treatment.
  • Injury assessment techniques - Differentiating between muscle, tendon, ligament and joint injuries
  • Sports massage techniques ie. Frictions, Muscle energy technique, soft-tissue release technique, neuro-muscular technique, strain/counterstrain and myo-fascial release technique
  • Training Techniques
  • Assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of muscle and joint injuries to - Foot and ankle injuries, Lower Leg injuries, knee joint and knee ligament injuries and upper leg injuries

Examinations:
IMST multiple choice theory paper.
IMST practical exam

A continual assessment structure is in place for both the theory and practical I.M.S.T. exams.

Case Studies: Students must complete a number of case studies, to gain valuable experience.

Course Fees: €1800 Per Year

Year 2

Qualifications gained: ITEC Diploma in Sports Massage
                                         I.M.S.T. Diploma in Sports Injury Therapy

Duration of Course: 145 contact hours

Study will include theoretical and practical application in the following areas:

  • Review and revision of injuries done to date
  • Assessment, Treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to - Shoulder, Arm, Elbow, Wrist and Hand & Hip
  • Back and Spinal Injuries
  • Neck and Shoulder Injuries
  • Overuse Conditions
  • Advanced Sports Massage Techniques
  • Sports Nutrition
  • Sports First Aid
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Overuse injuries
  • Taping and strapping
  • Exercise physiology
  • Advanced anatomy & physiology
  • Advanced sports massage techniques

Examinations:
ITEC multiple choice theory papers.
ITEC practical exams
IMST multiple choice theory paper.
IMST practical exam
