DIET AND NUTRITION DIPLOMA FOR COMPLEMENTARY THERAPISTS
The main aim of the ITEC level 3 Diploma in Diet and Nutrition for Complementary Therapists is to enable candidates to provide healthy eating advice for their clients whom they are already treating for another therapy, for the purpose of improving health and lifestyle. The candidate will study the theory of the main nutrients required for a healthy diet as well as deficiencies, disorders and key illnesses associated with diet. Additionally they will develop underpinning knowledge and skills required to successfully compose a dietary plan.
Qualifications gained: IITEC Diploma in Diet & Nutrition for Complementary Therapists
Duration of course: Alternate Saturdays 10am - 4pm, October to June
Pre- requisites for entry: Students must hold the ITEC Diploma in Holistic Massage or another complementary therapy. Students who have not gained this qualification with the Institute must forward a copy of their diploma when applying.

Study will include theoretical and practical application in the following areas
- Carbohydrates, fats & proteins- sources, benefits and their role in our diet
- Vitamins, Minerals, Antioxidants, Cholesterol
- Water and dehydration, Tap water vs bottled water and filtered water
- The digestive system
- Processing of food and its effects- additives, preservatives, commercial antioxidants, flavour enhances, MSG, artificial colours, thickeners, emulsifiers
- Health problems associated with processed foods
- Refined and unrefined foods
- Anti-nutrients such as alcohol, caffeine, smoking , the pill, antibiotics, stress, medications, carbonated drinks and their effect on the body
- Environmental pollutants
- The role of cholesterol in the diet and problems associated with high cholesterol levels
- Conditions and disorders such as obesity, diabetes, hypoglycemia. eating disorders, osteoporosis, coeliac disease, attention deficit disorder and the role of nutrition in these disorders
- Diets to treat common disorders such as constipation, cystitis, Irritable bowel disorder, sinusitis etc
- Dietary needs of specific groups including pregnant women, children and the older individual
- The dietary requirements associated with age, gender, body size, occupation, menopause and pregnancy
- Gluten intolerances
- Dairy intolerances
- Nut intolerances
- Common ailments related to nutritional imbalances
- Guidelines for correct eating- organic foods, preparation, storage, cooking etc
- Artificial sweeteners, refined foods, preservatives, colourants
- Probiotics, prebiotics
Examinations: I.T.E.C. multiple choice theory paper.
Case studies: 5 Case Studies to be completed giving clients individual diet plans based on thorough consultations and following their progression, improvement and changes over a 4 week period.
