I.M.S.T. Diploma in Anatomy, Physiology and Holistic Massage

Duration of course: 140 Contact Hours

Runs on a part time basis from September- June.

GMIT, Galway - alternate Saturdays 9:30am-5.30pm

Annacotty, Limerick –  alternate Sundays 9:30am-5.30pm or every Monday Evening, 6pm-10pm

Pre-requisites for entry: All students must be 18 years of age on exam date

Venue: GMIT Galway or Annacotty, Limerick (See above)

  • Study will include theoretical and practical application in the following areas:
    • Detailed study of the anatomy and physiology of the body, comprising a total of 50 contact hours
    • Classical Swedish Massage strokes and applications of same for the full body
    • Philosophy, history and origins of massage
    • Holistic Approach
    • Physiological and psychological benefits of massage
    • Contra-indications to massage
    • The effects of stress and the role of massage in alleviating it
    • Ethics, professionalism, client care and hygiene
    • Consultation techniques
    • Business aspects
    • Massage oils and their individual benefits
    • Legal aspects
    • Introduction to other alternative therapies
    • Nutrition

    Examinations: I.T.E.C. multiple-choice theory papers covering anatomy and physiology, business aspects and holistic massage. I.T.E.C. practical exam graded by external examiner.

    A continual assessment structure is in place for both the theory and practical I.M.S.T. exams

    Case Studies: Students must complete a number of case studies, by working on friends and family, to gain valuable experience.
